An Interview with Catherine Lalonde on the
Witch Fair
Fall Festival at Mont Sutton
On October 26, the Witch Fair will be held at the Salle Alec & Gérard Pelletier (SAG) for its fifth edition. This beloved local tradition brings together artisans, herbal medicine enthusiasts, and the community to celebrate all things mystical and magical.
To learn more about this event, Lou-Anne Daoust-Filiatrault, from Luloba Céramique and a member of the Corporation de développement Économique de Sutton (CDÉS), met with Catherine Lalonde, one of the fair's founders and owner of Officinalis Herboristerie.
Catherine, it’s a pleasure to meet you. As one of the founders of the Witch Fair, could you tell us what this event is all about and why it has become such a special tradition in Sutton?
The Witch Fair is a celebration of ancestral knowledge and community. What began as a small gathering of artisans and herbalists has grown into an annual event that attracts locals and visitors alike. This year, on October 26 at SAG, we'll once again come together to explore herbal products and crafts, and to celebrate our connection with nature.
The idea of witches has always been at the heart of the fair. In your opinion, what is a witch?
In the past, witches were often perceived in a negative light, particularly as evil old women. Today, we see witches as a representation of strength, healing and mastery of one's craft. The Witch Fair honors this tradition by showcasing artisans deeply devoted to their craft, whether it's herbalism, body care or visual arts. This kind of mastery is magic.
How did the idea for the Fair originate?
The Fair began as a way for me, Julia Leroux and Catherine Brosseau to open our herbal workshop to the public. We wanted to create a space where people could discover the magic of plants and explore their shared love of nature, healing and creativity. Over the years, other artisans joined us, and the project grew from there. After a few editions of the festival, we also created our boutique, Officinalis Herboristerie, noting the community's interest in herbal products. The store, located on Pine Street, is now open all year round.
It's amazing to see how the event has evolved. Can you tell us what visitors can expect this year?
This year will be the biggest yet! We're hosting the fair at SAG, and there will be an incredible range of artisans offering products such as herbal candles, dyes, body care items, teas, naturally dyed textiles and visual art. Laura McConnell of the holistic boutique, Le Loom, will be back and will also be offering crystals, tarot readings at the boutique, and other spiritual products that will add to the mystical ambience of the event.
I heard about the Witches' Circuit this year. What's it all about?
The Witches' Circuit is a new feature that will run at the same time as the fair. It's a trail of local merchants showcasing witch-themed activities or products. Visitors can stop at participating businesses, collect stamps on a special map, and if they visit three or more locations, they can enter a draw for a gift basket filled with handcrafted products from Fair vendors. It's a great way to get the community involved and support local businesses. Places like La Boîte à Sardine and La Brouerie are participating in the event, and are planning some wonderful witchcraft-themed treats!
Is it a family event?
We have ensured that the fair is a family-friendly event, so it’s not just a traditional Halloween celebration focused on candy. It’s about sharing the harvest season, connecting with the community, and celebrating the transition into autumn in a magical way. We want the event to be open to everyone.
This year's Witches' Fair will end with a Sutton Samhain party. What can people expect?
The Sutton Samhain party starts at 8 p.m. at SAG and is aimed more at adults. There will be a costume contest, so we encourage everyone to come dressed in their best witch attire. It's all about dancing, having fun and letting loose in a festive atmosphere.
Don't miss the magic!
