Hiking enthusiast?
There are several trails in Sutton just waiting to be explored.
Here are seven where you'll have a front-row seat to the region's natural splendours.
Psst! Before heading out, check the trail status. Seasonal closures may apply in spring during the thaw or in fall during hunting season. Remember to purchase your access pass online.
This is a well-known and well-loved trail — and for good reason! The panorama that unfolds from the Round Top summit is simply breathtaking. To get there, you'll follow the trail leading to Spruce Lake and its charming lookout before continuing the ascent and climbing a wooden staircase built into the rock face. A must-do 7.4 km hike in Sutton!
While it's possible to reach Lac Mohawk and the Pic Abenakis ridge above it via the Parc d'environnement naturel de Sutton trail network, we recommend another option: head up the ski runs to the top of chairlift VII, then hike approximately 3 km through the forest to your destination. Psst! this option pairs perfectly with a night at the summit campground at Mont Sutton.
If you're looking for a remote hike far from civilization, the Devil's Pass trail delivers — along with a fascinating geological phenomenon. The landscape is dotted with large boulders draped in ferns. The out-and-back route covers 4.8 km, but you can extend the adventure by climbing to the summit of Mont Singer for a total distance of 13 km. Good to know: a rustic campsite along the trail (reservation required) makes it perfect for a two-day micro-adventure.
A 2.4 km family-friendly hike that winds through the shade of tall hardwood trees alongside a crystal-clear stream. With two stream crossings followed by a short scramble up the rocky boulders beside the waterfall, this is often one of kids' favourite outings.
This 8.6 km loop hike is a true feast for the eyes! You'll first climb through maples, pin cherries, and yellow birches on the mountain's western slope before following the ridge along a trail fragrant with balsam fir. Your efforts will be rewarded with several spectacular viewpoints, including the Sommet des Hollandais. A picnic on the rocky outcrop of L'Échine is a must — savour the sweeping landscape stretching out before you.
For a forest hike away from the crowds, this trail fits the bill. Two options will get you to the three small summits on this route: via the parking lot on Chemin de la Vallée-Missisquoi in Sutton, or through the trail network at Au Diable Vert. The first option is more challenging, with an 8.2 km out-and-back, while the second offers a 6.8 km route with a gentler elevation gain. As a bonus, you may spot the charming Highland cattle grazing peacefully in the Au Diable Vert alpine meadow.
For an easy family hike, the Village-Mountain trail is an excellent choice. Starting from Parc Godue in Sutton, you'll follow the river beneath towering hemlocks before reaching Chemin Highland. Turn left, and after a two-minute walk, you'll find yourself immersed in peaceful nature with river viewpoints and lookouts — perfect for a picnic. Allow about 5 km to reach the Marmite des Sorcières, a serene and cool oasis at the foot of Mont Sutton.
And when it's time to refuel…
All that hiking works up quite an appetite! Fortunately, Sutton is equally renowned for its culinary scene. Satisfy your hunger and thirst at one of the town's excellent restaurants, cafés, and microbreweries.
